Hawaii
Although the story of The Karate Kid Part II takes place on Okinawa, the majority of the filming actually took place on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The producers chose Oahu because of its similar climate and landscapes to Okinawa, as well as its large population of Okinawan-born extras. They also built a convincing Japanese village set to complete the effect.
California
In addition to Hawaii, some scenes from The Karate Kid Part II were also filmed in California. These locations include:
- Cal State Northridge Matadome (opening scene)
- Warner Brothers Burbank Studios (Miyagi's house)
- Alonzo Avenue at Lake (Ali's family home)
