South Dakota Tribe Bans Gov. Noem from Reservation

Four Tribes Bar Governor for Comments on National Guard Deployment

Updated April 14, 2024

The Oglala Sioux Tribe has banned South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem from the Pine Ridge Reservation after she spoke about wanting to send the National Guard to quell protests on the reservation. The tribe's president, Julian Bear Runner, said that Noem's comments were "inflammatory and divisive" and that she is not welcome on the reservation.

Three other federally recognized Native American tribes in South Dakota have also banned Noem from their reservations. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, and the Yankton Sioux Tribe have all issued statements saying that Noem is not welcome on their land.

Noem's comments came in response to a series of protests on the Pine Ridge Reservation over the death of a Native American man, who was shot and killed by a police officer. Noem said that she was considering sending the National Guard to the reservation to help quell the protests.

The tribes have said that they do not want the National Guard on their land and that they will not cooperate with any such deployment. They have also said that they will take legal action if necessary to prevent the National Guard from entering their reservations.
