Bottrop: A City in West-Central Germany

Location and Geography

Bottrop is a city in west-central Germany on the Rhine-Herne Canal in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located in the Ruhr industrial area and adjoins Essen.

The city lies on the welly southwest spurs of the Recklinghauser Landrücken, just north of the Emscher River. Its coordinates are 51°31′N 6°54′E.

Bottrop is known for its coal mining industry, which has been in decline since the 1960s. The city has been working to diversify its economy and has attracted new businesses in the areas of logistics, healthcare, and education.

Bottrop is also home to several cultural attractions, including the Quadrat Bottrop shopping center, the Bottrop Castle, and the Tetraeder Bottrop, a landmark steel structure that offers panoramic views of the city.
